This is a study of the evolution of Greek education in the late Ottoman Empire and its subsequent fate under the Turkish Republic after 1923 with specific reference to the Greek community of Istanbul. In her work, Irini Sarioglou examines the rise of the Turkish nationalism in connection with the policy of the Turkish state regarding minorities and minority schools.

Dr Sarioglou analyzes a variety of issues including the political transformation of Turkey (under Atatürk), the impact of Kemalist dogma on Greek education and its psychological and practical consequences for the Greek community.

A study of the poetical works of French philhellenes inspired by the Greek War of Independence; these poems are found in the literature sections of French –mainly Parisian– magazines of the Restoration. The presentation and criticism of the following magazines are examined: Revue Encyclopedique, La Globe, La Pandore, Tablettes Universelles, La Muse Francaise, La Foudre, La Minerve Litteraire.

The publication is a research of the morphology of Greek newspapers from the time of their first appearance to the introduction of mechanical typesetting. Documentation has been largely based on the newspapers collection and the archives of ELIA.

A teenager’s war, 1942-1945 is an artistic album made by the painter Frederick V. Carabott, of English descent, depicting the memories and experiences of his captivity during the Second World War. It is a trilingual publication with concise text running along with the drawings, in English, Greek end German.

The album Barkoff in Greece presents 205 drawings by the Russian-Finnish painter Alexander Barkoff, along with texts on the artist’s life and work. Barkoff settled in Greece in 1927 and died in Athens in 1942. His works, among the first modernist watercolours in Greece, virtuously depict the human essence of the Greek urban space of the time.

This book is a tribute to Cavafy by a representative group of modern readers, each of them responding in their own way to their own Cavafy –readers who have reached different Ithakas and have found different meanings. Cavafy himself exhibited particular care for his future readers; never having underestimated them, he thought of them as of himself: critical, curious, intelligent, alert, sensitive to the ironies of life, open-minded but also uncompromising with their fancies –and wrote for them poems that he himself would like to read.
