Document Sources
The Vlanton Collection integrates documents from over 20 intelligence collections into a single collection.
RG226 CID “Regular” Series, Entry 16 The OSS circulated about 140,000 “regular”reports, which were numbered chronologically. The documents were held in the Central Information Division (CID) of the Research & Analysis Branch. Approximately 350 documents are included in the collection and are marked as 226-CID-0000.
RG 226 CID “L” Series Reports The OSS produced about 59,000 “L” documents (L stands for Limited distribution). L documents could only be read in the CID reading room. Approximately 2,800 documents, more than half the documents in the Vlanton collection, are L documents. They are identified as 226-CID-L0000.
RG226 CID “XL” Series Reports The OSS also produced over 40,000 XL documents through 1945. XL documents could only be viewed by OSS members in staff offices. The 300 documents in this collection are marked as 226-CID-XL0000.
RG165 Entry 77: From 1942-1945 the Military Intelligence Division of the War Department produced about 1,200 documents on Greece’s government, politics, and economics. The MID used a subject filing system. The last number is the subject number. For example 165-MID-3100 is a political document, while 165-MID-4000 denotes an economic document.
RG38 Office of Naval Intelligence collected reports from the Naval Attaches attached to US Embassies. This collection includes 500 ONI documents on the subjects: Political, Insurrection, Foreign Relations, and Various. A document 38-Naval-Insurrection refers to a document in the Insurrection folder.
RG59 R&A Reports These were longer reports prepared by the OSS Research & Analysis Branch and are now in the collection “Numbered Intelligence Reports 1941-1961” of the State Department, Record Group 59. The 40-plus R&A Reports are in this collection as 59- Report-(R&A Reports).
RG226 War Crimes HIS Bulletin. The Hellenic Information Service, the Greek Government in Exile’s intelligence service, produced 22 reports, totaling over 450 page. They list destroyed villages, civilians killed, and sabotage. They are marked in the collection as 226-War Crimes-(document number).
RG226 Entry 153A Strategic Services Unit (SSU). Following the disbanding of the OSS in August, 1945, a number of agents continued to collect intelligence under the War Department’s Strategic Services Unit. A small number of their reports are available on microfilm at the National Archives. They are marked in the collection as 226-153A-(microfilm roll and frame number).
RG226 Entry 165 Mediterranean and Burma Operations. These are primarily administrative documents from OSS posts, including Athens. The approximately 30 documents in the collection are marked as 226-165-Athens, or if related to the Pericles Mission, by folder number, 226-165-204.
RG226 Entry 190 These are files of the Director, including 9 boxes from the Athens post. The approximately 25 documents in the collection are marked as 226-165-Athens.
RG226 Entry 180 Donovan-Selected OSS Documents. These were microfilm rolls General Donovan filmed. The more than 40 documents in this collection are marked as 226-180-(microfilm number).
RG226, Entries 210-220, Sources and Methods Collection: The “Sources and Methods” Collection is 190 linear meters of documents, each given a unique WN number. Approximately 230 documents come from this collection. 226-210-WN16624 is from OSS Entry 210, document 16624.
RG226 Entry 99 History Office Records: This series contains the reports of OSS missions and posts and are identified by box and folder. Thus, “226-99-45-5” indicates box 45, folder 7.
RG226, Entry 34, Cairo Files the collection includes a report from the Evros Mission. It is marked as 226-34-154 (box number).
RG226, Entry 210, Boston Series: This is a subgroup within the OSS “Sources and Methods” Series, the were based on an OSS agent Fritz Kolbe, within the German Foreign Ministry.These are the OSS Washington, Office of the Director, Intelligence Files,“The Boston Series”, M-1740. There are 4 microfilm reels of German Foreign Ministry documents passed to the OSS by Fritz Kolbe; some are in German. All these documents are sourced as (Boston Series).
RG226, Entry 210, Circle Series: This is a subgroup within the OSS “Sources and Methods” Series, that consists of British intelligence decryptions of German espionage messages regarding Greece and the Dodecanese Islands. There are approximately 30 documents, all sourced as (Intercepts).
RG226, Entry 140, Washington and Pacific Coast Field Station Files. This includes less than 5 files and are marked 226-140-(folder number).
RG226-Director-M1740: There are 4 microfilm reels of German Foreign Ministry documents (mostly in German) in the OSS Washington, Office of the Director, “The Boston Series.” They are marked as 226-Director-M1740.
RG263 War Crimes Select OSS Documents Released Under the Nazi War Crimes Act. All documents are online from the National Archives. They are marked as 226-War Crimes-503 refers to document 503 or 226-War Crimes—NAID number (National Archives ID number).
RG 457 Magic Diplomatic Summaries The Army Security Agency, the forerunner to the National Security Agency (NSA) intercepted Greek diplomatic cables, 35 of which are included in this collection. They are identified as 457-NSA-(Box Number).
RG457, Entry P11a, Archival and Historian Source Files the National Security Agency gave the National Archives over 200 boxes of material, including a file on Nazi correspondence of communications with Athens. The files is from the years 1939-1940 and is identified as 457-P11a, Box A0132.
RG457 Nazi War Crimes In response to Nazi War Crimes legislation, the National Security Agency selected several boxes of material and acceded them to the National Archives. Included is a Greek diary of the German occupation, identified as 457-War Crimes-1B Microflim Folder 1.
RG 319 Records of the Army Staff, Publications File The series is a continuation of the RG165 military intelligence file, a small number of documents were issued in 1945. They are identified in the collection as 319-PUB-(Box Number).

RG 319 Records of the Army Staff, Geographic ID File This is the largest of the RG 319 intelligence series, which ranges from 1944 to 1951. They are identified in the collection as 319-85-(Documents Number).
