    October 12, 1944: Athens' liberation

The British army land the Greek territory occupied by Germans in the beginning of October 1944. Germans   gradually withdraw their forces starting from Peloponese and the Greek islands. Athens was next to be set free on October the 12th.

In the morning of the 13th of October people crowd the center of both Athens and Piraeus, celebrating and expressing their gratitude to the three allied countries, Britain, the Soviet Union and the USA, and also the Greek Communist Party and the National Liberating Organization.

Festive atmosphere and great excitement is obvious on the newspapers’ front page of the time.
