    Roupel

"8 April 1941, the newspaper ACROPOLIS announces the decimation of the Germans at the Perithori fort."

The struggle in eastern Macedonia and western Thrace in the period 6-9 April 1941, during the German invasion, is known as "the battle of the forts". It is one of the most glorious moments of Modern Greek history, as it caused the largest number of casualties for the Germans during the "Marita" operation.
The stronghold at Roupel successfully resisted the large number of German troops and their modern weaponry, preventing them from using the Strymon valley for their further advance in Greece.

Honouring the anniversary of the Roupel battle on 6 April as well as those heroically fallen and sacrificed for the freedom of their country, the Hellenic Literary and Historical Archive published the album Roupel, April 1941. The heroic resistance at the strongholds of the Siderokastron complex. The chronicle of a great epopee.
The album was published following a generous grant by the "Stavros S. Niarchos" Foundation. The texts are written by George Charonitis and the book is design by Frederick Carabott. The archive material and illustrations come from E.L.I.A., the Army History Office, the War Museum, the Hellenic Radio-Television (ERT) and other sources.
